Shaving before and after laser hair removal can be tricky, especially since you may have sensitive skin. If you’re interested inlaser hair removal, schedule your first appointment at Berman Skin Institute today.

Should I Shave Before Laser Hair Removal?

Yes, you should shave before laser hair removal — ideally around 12 to 24 hours before. Because the treatment targets hair follicles under the skin, shaving allows for more direct access to the root. Having too much stubble on the skin can also cause too much heat for your skin pigment.

We recommend shaving with a new, clean razor to prevent ingrown hairs, irritation and stray hairs. Clean razors also reduce the presence of bacteria and the risk of contact dermatitis after shaving.

When Can I Shave After Laser Hair Removal?

You can shave after laser hair removal, just not immediately. Laser hair removal is permanent but requires a few sessions to fully zap all the hair follicles in the treatment area. While some hairs may regrow between sessions, your skin will be sensitive for a few days afterward, so don’t reach for the razor yet. Wait several days to let your skin heal and avoid any irritation from shaving too soon.

Best Skin Care Practices for Laser Hair Removal Treatment Areas

There are ways to keep your skin happy and healthy following a laser hair removal treatment. Consider adding the following steps to your skin care routine:

  • Moisturize with fragrance-free lotion:You can and should moisturize after laser hair removal appointments. Be sure to use fragrance-free sensitive skin options to reduce skin irritation. Note that you should not moisturize before a hair removal session, only after.
  • Exfoliate before shaving:Exfoliating removes dead skin cells and frees the follicles from ingrown hairs. You should exfoliate the area around four to five days after treatment and any time before you shave.
  • Shave in the direction of hair growth:Shaving in the direction of hair growth is much better for your skin and hair follicles, reducing irritation, itching and ingrown hairs.
  • Apply sunscreen on exposed areas:If your treatment area is exposed when you go outdoors, be sure to apply sunscreen. Laser hair removal causes the skin to react more strongly to UV rays, so high-SPF sunscreen is key to help prevent signs of aging.
  • Use cold compresses for any inflammation:If the treated area becomes slightly inflamed after a session, use a cold water compress or a homemade ice pack.
