India’s EV Revolution: Unveiling the October 2025 Sales Report

India’s Electric Vehicle Revolution: October 2025 Sees Mixed Signals

The electric vehicle (EV) landscape in India is buzzing with activity, but October 2025’s sales data reveals a story of both progress and puzzling trends. While overall EV sales surged, certain segments experienced unexpected dips, leaving industry watchers scratching their heads.

According to the Vahan Dashboard (as of November 2, 2025, excluding Telangana and low-speed e-2W data), India’s total registered EV sales hit 2,34,191 units in October, a notable jump from September’s 1,83,820. But here’s where it gets interesting: not all categories shared in this success.

Two-wheelers (E2W) stole the spotlight, with sales skyrocketing to 1,43,796 units from 1,04,787 in September. Similarly, three-wheelers (E3W) like passenger vehicles and e-rickshaws saw healthy growth, with e-rickshaw sales climbing to 37,117 units. Even the four-wheeler (E4W) segment inched up to 17,873 units.

But this is the part most people miss: electric bus sales took a nosedive, dropping to 281 units from 343 in September. And while e-goods carriers showed modest growth, the penetration of EVs in the passenger car/cab category plummeted from 5.3% in September to just 3.2% in October. Is this a temporary blip or a sign of deeper challenges in these segments?

Zooming out, India sold a staggering 21,82,494 EVs between November 2024 and October 2025, with October 2025 marking the highest monthly sales and February 2024 the lowest. Yet, the penetration of EVs in the two-wheeler category shrank from 8.1% in September to 4.6% in October. Why the sudden drop? Could it be seasonal fluctuations, supply chain issues, or shifting consumer preferences?

When it comes to market leaders, Tata Motors dominates the e-4W and e-goods carrier segments, commanding over 40% market share in both. In the e-rickshaw space, YC Electric, SAERA Electric, and Dilli Electric led the charge, while PMI Electro Mobility topped electric bus sales.

But here’s the controversial question: Are we celebrating growth too soon? While EV sales are undeniably rising, the uneven performance across segments raises concerns. Is India’s EV revolution truly sustainable, or are we overlooking critical hurdles?
