Missing Girl at Garrapata Beach: Large-Scale Search Suspended, Latest Updates

A tragic incident at Garrapata Beach has left a family devastated and a community in search of answers. The story begins with a family of three, enjoying a day at the beach, when suddenly, they were swept into the ocean’s grasp. The search for the missing 5-year-old girl has now been suspended, leaving a heavy heart in its wake.

The Coast Guard and local authorities, including the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, have been on high alert, utilizing helicopters, dive teams, and other crucial resources. Despite their efforts, the search has been temporarily halted, but they remain on standby, ready to spring into action at a moment’s notice.

As the sun rose on Sunday, California State Parks took over the search operation. Their personnel tirelessly patrolled the shoreline and other accessible areas, both on foot and by vehicle, in hopes of finding any trace of the missing child.

The previous day, a multi-agency search effort was already underway when the family was swept into the water. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office responded swiftly to the water rescue incident at Garrapata State Beach, located along the scenic Highway 1.

Two adults were miraculously pulled from the water, but the 5-year-old remains missing. Officials clarified that the child was last seen wearing a white shirt, dispelling earlier reports of a red shirt.

State Parks revealed that CPR was administered to the father, who was then transported to a local hospital. The mother, too, was taken to the hospital, showing signs of hypothermia. Sadly, hours later, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the father’s passing. He has been identified as Yuji Hu, a 39-year-old from Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

The mother’s condition has been listed as stable, with mild hypothermia. A buoy located near Garrapata reported water temperatures of 59 degrees Fahrenheit and wave heights of 14 feet, adding to the challenges of the search.

State Parks is receiving support from various agencies, including the Coast Guard, CHP, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, and CAL FIRE BEU. Drivers passing through the area on Highway 1 are being asked to avoid stopping at Garrapata State Beach, ensuring emergency services have the space they need to conduct their critical search operations.
